Chalkidikis - Halbinsel in GriechenlandChalkidiki oder Halkidiki ist eine Halbinsel des griechischen Festlands. Sie liegt im Norden Griechenlands und ähnelt einer dreifingrigen Hand. Entsprechend der äußeren Form unterscheidet man 4 Hauptlandschaften: das Zentralland (den Handteller) und die 3 "Finger", die Halbinseln Athos, Sithonia und Kassandra. Die Halbinsel besitzt eine Gesamtfläche von fast 3.000 Quadratkilometern und kann mehr als 500 Kilometer Küste zu ihren Gunsten verbuchen. Chalkidiki ist reich gegliedert und verfügt über teilweise recht dichte Waldbestände. Zur Halbinsel gehören einige Inseln, von denen die meisten jedoch unbewohnt sind. Aus prähistorischer Zeit wurden gleichfalls einige Siedlungsreste gefunden, deren ältesten auf das 4. Jahrtausend v. Chr. datiert werden konnten. In der Antike wurde die Chalkidiki von Menschen besiedelt, die von den griechischen Inseln, insbesondere von Andros und Euböa stammten. Nach dem Hauptort von Euböa, Chalkis, erhielt die Halbinsel ihren Namen. Die frühen Siedler gründeten zahlreiche Städte. Im Laufe seiner langen, wechselvollen Geschichte wurde Chalkidiki hart umkämpft und wechselte oft den Besitzer. Selbst die größte Stadt hat gerade einmal etwas mehr als 6.000 Einwohner. Neben dem Bergbau und der Landwirtschaft (Olivenöl, Baumwolle, Honig, Wein) spielt der Tourismus eine wichtige Rolle in der Wirtschaft der Region. Insbesondere in den Gebieten Kassandra und Sithonia ist er gut entwickelt. Die Chalkidiki ist gut durch Straßen erschlossen und lässt sich daher ausgezeichnet mit dem Auto erkunden. Alle größeren Ortschaften werden zudem regelmäßig mit Bussen angefahren. Von den Zentren Nea Moudania und Polygyros bestehen mehrmals täglich Busverbindungen in die kleineren Orte. Internationale Flughäfen oder Eisenbahnverbindungen existieren auf Chalkidiki nicht. Größte Sehenswürdigkeit der Chalkidiki ist die herrliche Natur und die wunderschöne, vielfältige Landschaft mit dichten Wäldern, romantischen Steilküsten und flachen Badestränden. Das macht Chalkidiki für einen Aktivurlaub wie geschaffen. Am berühmtesten ist die Mönchsrepublik Athos auf der Südspitze der gleichnamigen Halbinsel. Daneben gibt es aber noch zahlreiche andere Sehenswürdigkeiten. In Kallithea, einem touristischen Zentrum der Halbinsel Kassandra mit mehreren Hotelanlagen am Strand, befinden sich die Überreste eines antiken Tempels, der Ammon Zeus geweiht war. Die antike Stadt Olynthos lädt ebenfalls zur Besichtigung ein und lässt die Zeit des klassischen Altertums wieder lebendig werden. In einer Tropfsteinhöhle bei Petralona wurden fossile Überreste menschlicher Vorfahren gefunden, die mindestens 200.000 Jahre alt sind. Die Höhle kann besichtigt werden. Direkt neben dem Höhleneingang befindet sich ein kleines Museum, in dem einige der Funde ausgestellt sind. Ein anderes beliebtes Ausflugsziel ist das Dorf Parthenonas. Es liegt in der Nähe des Hafens Neos Marmaras. Im Dorf lebten einst viele Menschen, die aber nach und nach abwanderten, bis etwa 1970 der letzte Einwohner Parthenonas verließ. Nach einigen Jahren kamen einige vermögende Griechen zurück und begannen, die Häuser im landestypischen Stil zu restaurieren. Das schmucke Dorf zieht wieder viele Besucher ein. In der ehemaligen Dorfkirche befindet sich jetzt ein volkskundliches Museum. |
